Young during a preseaon game prior to the 2012 season.
There’s a lot of people out there – fans and analysts alike – that believe much maligned free agent quarterback Vince Young could still be an effective player in the NFL. After all, he did have an impressive run with the Tennessee Titans and his record as a starter is a winning one.
Young worked out with the Buffalo Bills before last season, but wasn’t able to beat out Tyler Thigpen for the backup job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. There was a time when it wouldn’t have even been a question who the best of that group is. It is now 2013, and Young is getting another shot to make an NFL roster. This time around, the Green Bay Packers are seeing if Young has anything left to bring to the table.
Around The League spoke to Young in March after he worked out at Texas’ Pro Day, and the 2006 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was optimistic he would find an NFL job. But Young’s only workout this offseason was with the Oakland Raiders, and he hasn’t attracted much attention since April.
Even if Vince Young were to make the Packers’ roster, he’d be sitting behind the best quarterback in the league. Aaron Rodgers would have to engineer a few blowouts for Young to even see the field. Even so, it would be nice to see Young get one last shot to play in the league, even if it’s in a backup role.
